Ohio River Valley Hydrogen and CCS Hub Market Formation

Ohio Rivier Valley Workshop Cover

On July 12, 2021, the Labor Energy Partnership—a collaboration of the Energy Futures Initiative (EFI) and the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO)—held a virtual workshop on hydrogen and carbon capture and storage (CCS) in the Ohio River Valley. The workshop, which was one in a series on decarbonizing the economy, convened leaders from government, labor, and industry for a robust discussion on the value of hydrogen and CCS market formation to the local economy and global energy transition and what is needed from government, labor, and industry to facilitate its development. The summary report is dedicated to the late Richard Trumka, leader of the AFL-CIO for 12 years and cofounder of the Labor Energy Partnership.

Keynote speakers included Senators Joe Manchin and Sherrod Brown, Gina McCarthy (White House National Climate Advisor), Carol Battershell (Workshop Moderator and Distinguished Associate for EFI), Ernest J. Moniz (CEO of EFI); Melanie Kenderdine (EFI Principal and Executive Vice President); Elizabeth Shuler (Secretary-Treasurer of the AFL-CIO); and Richard Trumka (President, AFL-CIO).

The workshop summary report was released in September 2021.
