Global Advisory Board

EFI’s External Advisory Board is led by Lord Browne of Madingley, the former Executive Chairman of BP who brings more than four decades of energy experience to EFI. The Advisory Board, which is still in formation, will include individuals from industry, academia, NGOs, government, think tanks, labor and the global investment community.

John Browne, Baron Browne of Madingley, is Executive Chairman of L1 Energy and the Chairman of Huawei Technologies (UK) Ltd.

Lord Browne was a Partner of Riverstone Holdings LLC from 2007–2015 and the Government’s Lead Non-Executive Director from 2010–2015. He was President of the Royal Academy of Engineering 2006–2011 and is current Chairman of the Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering.

Previously, Lord Browne served as Chief Executive of BP plc from 1995–2007 and on a variety of corporate boards, including Intel, DaimlerChrysler and Goldman Sachs. He was a Trustee of the British Museum from 1995–2005, Chairman of the Advisory Board of the Cambridge Judge Business School until June 2010, and is now Chairman of the International Advisory Board of the Blavatnik School of Government in Oxford. He is the Chairman of the Donmar Warehouse and a Fellow of the Royal Society, the Royal Academy of Engineering, and the American Academy of Arts & Sciences

Ana Palacio

John M. Deutch

John M. Deutch is an emeritus Institute Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Mr. Deutch has been a member of the MIT faculty since 1970, and has served as Chairman of the Department of Chemistry, Dean of Science and Provost. Mr. Deutch has published over 140 technical publications in physical chemistry, as well as numerous publications on technology, energy, international security, and public policy issues. In May 1995, he was sworn in as Director of Central Intelligence following a unanimous vote in the Senate, and served as DCI until December 1996. Read full bio | List of publications

Ana Palacio is a Senior Strategic Counsel to Albright Stonebridge Group, where she draws on her experience as Foreign Minister of Spain and a member of the European Parliament to advise clients on business in Brussels and throughout the European Union. Ms. Palacio is also the Founding Partner of Palacio y Asociados, a Madrid-based consulting and law firm. Ms. Palacio was the first woman to serve as Foreign Minister of Spain, from 2002-2004. Previously she was a member of the Spanish Parliament, where she chaired the Joint Committee of the two Houses for European Affairs. Read full bio.

Andy Karsner is Managing Partner of Emerson Collective, Senior Strategist and Space Cowboy at X; and Precourt Energy Scholar at Stanford University. He champions the values of Emerson Collective to prioritize the needs of humanity in concert with nature. His entrepreneurial leadership has been associated with both venture capital and private equity portfolios responsible for guidance and/or holdings in some of the most successful technology startups over the last ten years, including Nest (Internet of things), Tesla (mobility), Recurrent (solar), and Codexis (biotech). From 2005 to 2008, Karsner served as Assistant Secretary of Energy for Efficiency and Renewable Energy of the United States, managing the approximately $2 billion annual federal applied science, research and development portfolio. In this role he helped assemble significant bipartisan coalitions to implement or enact the Energy Policy Act, the Energy Independence and Security Act and the America Competes Act, all of which remain the foundation of comprehensive energy policy today. Alain Ebobissé is head of the Africa50 Infrastructure fund. Prior to his appointment to Africa50, Alain Ebobissé headed the Global Fund for the development of infrastructure projects (IFC InfraVentures) of the World Bank Group, a structure in which he led the design, structuring and implementation from the beginning. While occupying this position, he oversaw a team of  experienced and highly qualified specialists piloting the development of several infrastructure projects. He supervised infrastructural investment not only in Africa, but also in Asia, Europe, and Latin America. In addition to IFC InfraVentures, he was also responsible for investment in the Department of Global Infrastructure and Natural Resources of the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the branch of the World Bank Group dedicated to the private sector. He was a member of the Appropriations Committee, the Energy Committee, the Commerce Science and Technology Committee and the Indian Affairs Committee. In the U.S. House Congressman Dorgan was a member of the Ways and Means Committee from 1982 to 1992.  He also served as a member of the House Agriculture Committee and the Select Committee on Hunger.
