Our Innovation Agenda:
Areas of Focus

EFI undertakes analytical projects across the broad spectrum of issues affecting the nexus of energy technology innovation; decarbonization of energy systems and large-scale carbon management; energy-related job creation and regional economic development; and energy security.

Despite the Trump Administration’s abandonment of the Paris Agreement, there’s no going back. The world is headed to a low-carbon future because of the risks posed by climate change and the associated security risks to the U.S. and our friends and allies. EFI will identify ways to accelerate energy innovation and support industry, academia, city, state and regional leadership in that pursuit. Clean energy technologies will create jobs, enhance our global competitiveness and address the imperatives of climate change.

Our initial capacity-building effort will enable us to support analysis and development of high-impact implementation strategies in a set of focus areas that may include:

  • Deep decarbonization of the developed world’s energy systems on a generational time scale through an all-of-the-above approach.

  • Modernizing electricity systems.

  • Regional, national and international clean energy innovation, including domestic and international efforts on Mission Innovation.

  • Energy for American Indians, Alaska Natives and other under-served and low-income communities.

  • Building the 21st century energy workforce.

  • Energy security, infrastructure resilience and emergency management.

  • The evolution of domestic and global natural gas markets on the pathway to a low-carbon future.
